Ok. Here is the deal about homework. I have always hated it, all through the years of my childhood and even some into college. I would curse my teachers every day for giving me so much homework when I wanted to be doing so many other things--really, anything but homework! I wondered why the teachers could not just teach us the material that we were required to learn within the time that was alotted to them. After all, I was one of those perfect attendance people most years in school, and I felt like I was doing my part in this learning thing without laboring for hours over homework. I started to carry this sentiment with me when I began my college years, and resented my professors for the readings and other miscellaneous tasks that they assigned us from week to week. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks.
To some of you out there, this may sound crazy. But to those of you who are teachers and professors, you will be thanking me for being an outsider who understands what you are trying to do and is sharing it publicly.
Homework is where the real learning happens. Homework; papers, math problems, readings...this is where the actual comprehension of what we hear about in class takes place. Trust me. If you are like me, and most of your life you have basically neglected homework and resented teachers who gave it, just give it a try for a couple of weeks. It's almost fun (don't tell any of my high school teachers that!). You actually understand and comprehend those things that the person at the front of the class rants on about the whole class period, and you won't feel lost the whole time. Again, trust me. If there is anything that I've learned in college, it's that learning is for your own benefit.
Just to set the record straight, I still hate homework. Especially when it takes me away from things like talking to my beloved fiance! But I understand it and think it's ultimately for the best.
I'm gonna do this more often by the way...
